Hi, just thought I would introduce myself.
I am 29 and live in melbourne Australia, i am in the process of setting up a Bird Shelter for unwanted birds. I have a King Parrot inside and I breed Budgies, Love Birds, Green Cheeks a Quakers. Last week I got rung and asked if I could pick up some Budgies and Teils to go into the shelter while at this guys house he brought out his 8 week old female Eckkie he was hand raising. I was really worried and told him that she needed to see a vet NOW. I drove home in tears thinkng of this poor girl. A few phone calls later I convince him to sell me the bird and I go back down there at 11pm at night to pick her up and straight to the vet the next morning and I get told to switch handriasing mix that she only weights in at 350grams. We also discover that she has thrust, a bac infection, worms and crop issues.
She was on antibotics and was nasty for the first three days I had her, then she became a teddy bear and loves cuddles. The we got fits. We think they are caused from the soy in the HRM but she went on anti seziure meds and we upped her Vit A and also test for heavy metal poising.
After a follow up she is now off all her drugs expect the Vit A liquid but she has now decided that she wants to wean herself! We are attempting to get organic baby foos down her and mashed vegies or puree friut. She loves Bananas so she gets them at every meal. She also likes Weetabix and plays with her seed but she has dropped weight.
As I have never had an Eckkie and never really thought about having one I am now researching like mad. Originally i thought that I woud rehome her once weaned but because of her medical history and her fits it will be hard to rehome her so Elmo my King Parrot is going to get a new room mate (seperate cages).
Anyway hopefully you can help me out with what to do with her. Oh and the other thing is that tonight she decided she could fly and flew into the wall she has never shown any sign of wanting to fly and just flew off the bench! Really thrown in the deep end.
